Day 436 - Deck Railing Starts

Tuesday , August 8 -- Ok, this may be Plan K, but we started installing the deck railing today...

Dave and Kelli started the morning by taking inventory of the CableRail pieces and parts. Then, they started laying out the railing with a helpful couple of calls to Mike at work. Then Dave started drilling holes for the lag bolts and temporarily set posts.

The reason that we moved from Plan J to Plan K is because the flashing on all sides of the deck is "loose" - it does not touch the underside very well in places, especially along the edges, the material under the flashing is not level from end to end, and (the biggest issue) the flashing on the hangar door side falls off 1/2" in 18". We are going to have to shim (I know that our loyal readers know this word well and feel our pain every time that that word creeps into the daily chatter)... we will have to shim up the outer boards along the outer edge in order to level the deck. So, torquing down posts mounted on top of the planks and shims would probably not be a good idea.

We will notch out planks to fit around the posts.

While Dave was working on the posts, Kelli finished painting the upper deck. The deck is now ready for boards. We still need to do some reinforcement in for the 5" square railing posts. We will have to remove the soffit board under the deck and install blocks in which to lag down the posts.

Pete continued on the porch and steps. This is a very time consuming process to shape each stone piece to look natural and fit...

Tomorrow, Dave and Kelli are taking a day off. Dave is going to Redding tonight and tomorrow to run personal errands, including picking up supplies for our house. Kelli is going with the Trinity Center Garden Club on their tour of Menzie's Native Nursery in Weed, CA.
