Day 423 - The Deck is a Go
Thursday , July 20 -- Dave, Rick,
and I (mostly Dave) installed the first of the deck planks today. We
are creating a herringbone pattern "picture framed" with straight boards.
After all the diagonal planks are set, Dave will cut the the ragged ends
when all the planks are hot and expanded. Dave has the next three workdays off, so no deck progress until Wednesday. By then, the hot weather
should be easing...

My deck job was to keep the space under the planks vacuumed so
that we don't trap shaving, fir tree needles, and dirt under the planks.
Pete and John pushed on with the seemingly endless stonework...

Dave and I worked on trying to get the hangar septic sump pump working
this morning. Dave replaced the broken breaker, but the pump doesn't
seem to have enough power to push the water up to the main drain line
- house karma again. We will have to wait for Richard to return...

Our kitchen soapstone counters, sinks, and tile should ship tomorrow.
The freight travel should take 5 business days. The closest that we can
get the truck to come to us is Sacramento.
I ordered the exterior eyebrow column covers today. The covers will
take about 3 weeks since they are a custom (surprise) size.
I also ordered two loads of compost for landscaping. We are going to mix
some local "clean" (rock-free) soil with river silt and the compost.
Our friend in Coffee Creek used to be a commercial landscaper and is going
to help us with the landscape plan. Vance came by to pick up our current
landscape plan sketches and will stop by again on Monday. We need to
get a good plan so that we can lay out the water system and get pipes
installed. The water lines must be in before we can start building the
short rock flower beds between the abutments.
We are waiting on disconnect boxes and wire before we can turn on the
air conditioning.
